Regina Benjamin Biography

Regina Benjamin was born in 1956, Dr. Regina Benjamin attended Xavier University in New Orleans and was a member of the second class of the Morehouse School of Medicine. Regina Benjamin received her M.D. degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed her residency in family practice at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. After entering solo practice in Bayou La Batre, Dr. Regina Benjamin spent several years moonlighting in emergency rooms and nursing homes to keep her practice open. After receiving an MBA from Tulane University, Regina Benjamin converted her office to a rural health clinic.

Dr. Regina Benjamin received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights. Last fall, Regina Benjamin received a MacArthur Foundation ‘genius grant.’ But Regina Benjamin made headlines in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, with her determination to rebuild her rural health clinic Bayou La Batre, Ala., which serves 4,400 patients who would be hard-pressed to find care elsewhere.
